UK
Fire International
The Problem
UK Fire would describe itself as one of the larger independent fire
companies in the UK, a fire extinguisher manufacturer for the last
30 years and a growing services and systems business.
With a fleet of over a hundred vans and cars the transport costs
were out of control and the fleet was operating in a disorganised
manner resulting in excess engineer downtime and wasted management
time. There were no controls or systems in place as the fleet was
handled by an inexperienced person on a part time basis, this resulted
in problems such as excessive monthly lease costs, a non standard
fleet with none of the economies of scale associated with using
one / two manufacturers, vehicle replacement not being managed resulting
in the need for expensive short term rentals, vehicles being lost
in the system resulting in unnecessary double rentals and no maintenance
systems in place resulting in excess vehicle down time.
The
Solution
To find a company that could supply a fleet management service at
a reasonable cost to companies that can’t justify a full time
fleet manager. WMG developed a tailored package, which gave us all
the benefits of a full time fleet manager without the cost.
Firstly they carried out a fleet review to identify potential cost
savings and to suggest changes to our procedures. This resulted
in:
1. Reviewing our vehicle funders to ensure that when vehicles
were due for replacement this was done as economically as possible.
2. Gradually implementing a single manufacturer strategy
when vehicles are due for replacement to gain economies of scale
benefits and to achieve standardisation.
3. Simplifying breakdown, accident, maintenance and new vehicle
delivery procedures to ensure that staff time is not wasted sorting
out vehicle issues.
4. Reducing vehicle movement costs.
5. Using medium term rentals where appropriate rather than
leasing to avoid being stuck with unwanted vehicles if staff left
etc.
6. Implementing a vehicle condition monitoring system to
ensure vehicles are kept in good condition and to avoid excessive
reconditioning charges from leasing companies on the return of vehicles.
Overall we are delighted with the levels of service and professionalism
that we have received from WMG. As a result we have achieved large
direct and indirect cost savings.
